Community Overdose Prevention Trainer
Reports to: Director of Operations
Type of Position: Volunteer
Purpose: KyHRC was established in 2015 with the goal of advocating for the health needs of people who use injection drugs and improving public health throughout the city. KyHRC works to promote and implement strategies that prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis C, prevent death by overdose and disease, support healthy behaviors, address addiction, and facilitate clients into medical and mental health care, and drug treatment.
Position Summary:
The Community Overdose Prevention Trainer provides overdose prevention and response trainings and naloxone distribution trainings at both training events, and public-facing events or community and institutional partners on behalf of KyHRC Overdose Prevention Program, with the goal of preventing overdose deaths in Kentucky. In collaboration with the Community Engagement Specialist, the responsibilities may include:
- Implement overdose prevention trainings for external partners at community events in Jefferson and some surrounding counties, via in-person or virtual platforms.
- Assemble naloxone kits to be dispensed in trainings and maintain records for all kits dispensed.
- Provide support for packing and mailing of naloxone kits and training related materials.
- Contribute to the development of new trainings, educational materials and resources aimed at preventing unintentional/accidental overdose deaths.
- Work closely with leadership and staff to collaborate on and coordinate community-based overdose prevention activities.
The ideal candidate for this position should have excellent organizational skills, be able to work well under pressure, and have experience working with groups of people.
Monthly Hourly Commitment: 5-20 Hours (Flexible)

Volunteer Community Outreach Worker

Purpose: KyHRC was established in 2015 with the goal of advocating for the health needs of people who use injection drugs and improving public health throughout the city. KyHRC works to promote and implement strategies that prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis C, prevent death by overdose and disease, support healthy behaviors, address addiction, and facilitate clients into medical and mental health care, and drug treatment.
Position Summary:
The Volunteer Community Outreach Worker is responsible for delivering and conducting supportive services related to engaging communities in Jefferson, Shelby, Trimble, Oldham, Spencer, and Bullitt Counties by providing harm reduction lead outreach activities and Naloxone Training/Distribution. In support and collaboration with KyHRC Outreach Team, this role will engage in the following task:
- Service Delivery: On the day of service, the role is responsible for: (1) collecting client intake, client surveys, and other data for the mobile unit and syringe services program; (2) ensuring culturally and linguistically appropriate education is provided to participants, family members, and the community; (3) providing supplies for syringe services; (4) promoting and conducting testing, counseling, and referral for infectious diseases; (5) offering information for addiction treatment services; and (6) providing overdose prevention education and supplies including Naloxone and Fentanyl test strips.
- Data Collection: Collect program and client-level data, documenting various aspects of the engagement in the mobile unit, needle/syringe exchange, Naloxone, and testing services. According to KyHRC, and Louisville Metro Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) policies and procedures, submit all required documentation in a timely fashion.
- Outreach and Engagement: Conduct various community outreach, training, and/or activities, including delivering current information about harm reduction, injury/disease prevention, and substance abuse disorder treatment and care.
- Create kits: Assist in creating harm reduction kits, i.e. Naloxone, wound care, etc;
- Educate: Provide written and verbal harm reduction information on safer injection strategies, vein, and abscess care, overdose prevention, HIV, STI, and hepatitis transmission to program participants and area providers.
Outreach schedule: Varies Weekly; weekends and evenings available.

Kit Making Party Coordinator
Reports to: Director of Operations
Type of Position: Volunteer
Purpose: KyHRC was established in 2015 with the goal of advocating for the health needs of people who use injection drugs and improving public health throughout the city. KyHRC works to promote and implement strategies that prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis C, prevent death by overdose and disease, support healthy behaviors, address addiction, and facilitate clients into medical and mental health care, and drug treatment.
Position Summary:
Kit making party coordinator is responsible for organizing and coordinating kit making events where participants will create designated harm reduction kits. The coordinator is responsible for ensuring that the event runs smoothly and that all participants have a fun and enjoyable experience. Under the direction of KyHRC leadership, the coordinator’s duties may include:
- Planning and organizing the event, including assisting with selecting the venue, creating a schedule, and coordinating with vendors.
- Preparing materials for the event, including picking up supplies, setting up workstations, and ensuring that all necessary tools are available.
- Providing instruction to participants on how to complete the kits.
- Managing the event on the day of the party, including supervising other volunteers, ensuring that participants are following safety guidelines, and addressing any issues that arise.
- Cleaning up after the event, including disposing of waste and returning any unused materials.
The ideal candidate for this position should have excellent organizational skills, be able to work well under pressure, and have experience working with groups of people.
Monthly Hourly Commitment: 15-20 Hours (Flexible)
Kit making party schedule: 3rd Thursday of each month
