What Are Test Strips?
Test strips are simple yet powerful tools that can detect the presence of fentanyl and other potent substances in various drugs. Given the rising prevalence of fentanyl-laced substances, these strips can significantly reduce the risk of accidental overdoses.
How Test Strips Work
- Obtain a Small Sample: Users take a small sample of the substance they wish to test.
- Dissolve in Water: The sample is then dissolved in a small amount.
- Dip the Strip: The test strip is dipped into the solution.
- Read the Results: After a short waiting period, the strip will indicate the presence or absence of fentanyl through color changes.
Testing Other Drugs
- Crystals: Finely grind up the sample, then run the test as instructed.
- Pills: Pills must be broken down, but the entire pill must be tested since these mixtures can be uneven.
- Blotter Tabs: Cut off a small piece, then run the test as instructed.
- Testing bag residue is a great option: Scrape it into the cup or stick it indirectly. Just be sure not to put any drugs back inside of a wet bag!
- Amphetamine-Based Drugs (Speed, Meth, MDMA, etc.): A large amount can cause a false positive, so use only a few grains of powder and run the test in a small cup filled ~halfway with water.
Why Use Test Strips?
- Life-saving: Early detection of fentanyl can prevent accidental overdoses.
- Empowerment: Provides individuals with the information needed to make safer choices.
- Awareness: Raises awareness about the risks of drug use and the prevalence of contaminants.
- Community Safety: Contributes to broader public health and safety efforts.
